The story of Leela and Snickers
by Raquel Alvarado
My kids fell in love with their friend's bunny and of course had to have one of their own, so after much time, research and consideration, off to BUNS we went. My intention was to let the kids pick a bunny but in the end I couldn't help but fall in love with Leela (formerly Blanca). Her fur was so soft, and her story just pulled at my heart. A former show bunny who after losing her eye was no longer any use to her former owners. She had been at BUNS for a couple years and I just knew I had to bring her home. The moment my house check was approved I left my house in Ojai and rushed over to BUNS to pick her up!
Leela has a very independent personality. We have guinea pigs, a hamsters, and we had a cat... Leela pays no attention to any of them so we thought we'd never be able to pair her with another bunny.
Leela has become a part of our family, she came with me to all of my sons baseball games to watch from the sidelines, she comes to the parks with the kids, she even helped watch over our yard sale one weekend!
My niece also fell in love with Leela and wanted a bunny of her own. I brought her with me on one of my volunteer shifts to find out what a bunny needs and we came across Snickers (formerly Enzo). He has the cutest face and was so tiny. We all just wanted him to be a part of our family, so she went home and got ready to adopt him.
We had bunny play dates at grandma's house and the two would pay no attention to each other. After about six months my niece got a promotion at work and was going to school full time. With less time for Snickers we decided to bring him over to my house where he would have a bunny friend and more people to play with.
When they first started living together Leela was in love! She wanted to groom snickers and be by his side every moment she could, but snickers wasn't having it. He was very confused by the affection and would run away after a few seconds. After time they are now inseparable and Snickers has started grooming his sister and returning the favor. Leela definitely has stronger feelings for her brother, when Snickers goes to the other room Leela runs in circles till he comes back... she won't follow him because she'd have to cross the linoleum floor and she hates that!
The two have completely different personalities, but together they are two peas in a pod. Leela is stubborn and quite the diva who loves me to groom her only when we first wake up and before bed, and if you stop before she's ready she'll make sure you know she wasn't done yet. Snickers is spunky and free spirited. He loves to run and find places to hide. He will come up to me to pet him only when he sees me petting Leela.
Living with bunnies has been amazing and rewarding. They bring so much joy to us. They're truly another member of our family.
